Abstract
Purpose: the family financial management is one of the most important factors determining the dynamics and quality of the marital relationship as well as one of the aspects of family functioning that can play an important role in the stability and continuity of the marital relationship.
Methods: This research is a descriptive and qualitative study. In this study, financial management practices of 25 Sanandaj couples who believe they have successful and firm marriages were selected based on purposive sampling method. Sample analyzed using qualitative method, open coding and category.
Findings: The research findings were as follows: First, for most couples one of the partners handled the day-to-day finances and that required trust and communication. Second, these couples had little or no debt or had a goal of paying off debt. Third, couples lived within their means and were frugal. Fourth, couples’ practices of having joint or separate accounts were among the major topics of interest to couples. Fifth, how they dealt with financial challenges was part of the couple relationship dynamics, and sixth, their view of other couples having financial challenges was part of their cognitive dynamics.
Conclusion: The research findings show that financial issues have a prominent role in the couple's relationship quality as well as include much of the marital relationship dynamics. Couples who have successful and firm life can easily solve their financial problems through consultation and cooperation.
