The effect of membership in web based social network on pre marriage belief and attitudes: Qualitative research

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of membership in the virtual social networks on pre marriage thoughts and attitudes. This study conducted based on a qualitative research and by using grounded theory study. Twenty-five girls who were members of the social networks at least six months and they were members of the opposite sex groups selected by a non-probability snowball sampling method. Data collected by semi-structured interviews until data saturation. Based on the performed interviews, 11 main categories of responses were obtained that were divided into four cluster, cognitive factors (attitude to membership, mate-selection criteria), values (cultural norms and religious beliefs), underlying psychological factors (need satisfaction, marriage anxiety and loneliness) and lifestyle (social media influence and interpersonal relationships) which had the highest repeatability. The results of current study indicated that presence in the social networks influenced girls' premarital beliefs and attitudes and obviously reduced the tendency to marriage between them.
