Introduction: The role of family variables and borderline personality disorder (BPD) wasn't seen mainly. The current research aimed at investigating the roles of marriage and gender in the effects of experimental stressors on intellectual functioning of patients with BPD.
Method: Thirty clients (15 women and 15 men) were selected among the clients of psychiatric offices, in Sanandaj, with the diagnosis of BPD, who accepted to participate in this study. They were assessed via MCMI-III, and The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III (WAIS-R). After two weeks, all the participants underwent an experimental stressor to identify their reaction to failure. Then, they were assessed again via WAIS-R. The results were compared with their matched, non- clientsgroup through ANCOVA.
Results: the results indicate the interfering role of marriage and gender in intellectual functioning in a reaction to laboratory stressors. The variables of marriage and gender interact with marriage and gender in the impairing effects of laboratory stressors on intellectual functioning.
Discussion: Important roles can be accepted for the family variables in understanding the intellectual and social adjustment of BPD patients. It appears that it is needed to consider family variables for a deeper understanding of cognitive and behavioral aspects of BPD.
